Work underway to restore second platform at Newquay

Work on Newquay station's second platform

As part of the Mid Cornwall Metro project, Network Rail’s contractor Colas is working to restore a second platform at Newquay station.

The work includes strengthening a retaining wall to support the platform, re-building the platform front wall, installing lighting, shelter, drainage, telecoms and tactile paving.

Why is the platform being restored?
Along with another key piece of infrastructure to be delivered as part of Mid Cornwall Metro – a new rail passing loop at Tregoss Moor – the second platform will enable local and long-distance services to operate on the line at the same time, meaning local services can run every day, including Summer Saturdays, all year round.

The new platform will be shorter than the existing one and will be used only by local trains.

How frequently will trains run?
The second platform is a key step towards providing an hourly train service on the Newquay-Par line, to be introduced next year as part of the Mid Cornwall Metro project.

What about through trains to Falmouth?
The project will then go on to deliver through trains between Newquay and St Austell, Truro, Penryn and Falmouth, starting in 2026. Visit the homepage to find out more.
